How Does One Grow Closer to God?

This is a question I asked myself many years ago. Unfortunately, I did not grow up in the Church; therefore, my knowledge was pretty limited when it came to God. What I did know, I had learned by watching the movie, “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Granted, I believed in God, because I was told there was a God; yet, I didn’t know God like I know Him now. When I raised my kids, I had wanted to do better when it came to teaching my children about God and yet I too was unsuccessful. I allowed life to get in my way and I deeply regret that now.

In my later years though, it has become my mission to share what I have learned with others and to be the example for my children. My oldest once asked, “Why do you believe so much now, Mom? You never raised us that way.” Well, it’s never too late! We are all children of God and our mission is to love on each other just as God loves on us. Sharing how God has touched our lives helps others recognize Him in their lives. Isn’t that a blessing in itself?

I’m no Saint, and I’m not perfect and yet God still loves me. God has forgiven all of my sins and He continually shows up for me. I’ve learned the more I talk to Him and the closer I get to Him, the more I recognize Him in my life. If you’ve been following me, you know I had a heart attack in 2016 where God gave me a second chance at life and it’s been my goal ever since to be even more vulnerable in my sharing. Below is a Chapter from my book, “Break Down Your Walls: Be the Person God Created You to Be…Be a Better You!” where I try and explain how I became closer to God.

Ask, Believe, Receive

Have you asked yourself, “How does one grow closer to God?” The simple truth is by trusting, obeying, and believing. Trust that He knows what is best for us, and that He wants the best for us. Obey His word, taking that next step even when you can’t see that step. Believe with your heart and soul that you have received His blessing, even if it has not arrived yet—for you know it is on its way.

You may think, “If God is all-knowing, why do I have to ask? He should already know what I need.” While God is all-knowing, He still wants us to go to Him and ask. Those three words, “go to Him,” are the most important words to remember. If we don’t pray to God, if we don’t praise Him, seek Him, believe in Him, and trust in His word, then we will always want more. We will never be happy with what we have. He will continue to redirect us, and give us signs that He is there for us, but when we are closed to recognizing those signs, life will just pass us by. We will be okay, but we can live a much better life, an abundant life, when we are tuned into God at all times, and can recognize His Will for us in the grand scheme of life. So, ask God for what you want. Don’t be afraid to pray big, bold prayers, either. Let Him know your wildest dreams. You may think it is extraordinary, but God can do extraordinary things.

Take a few moments here and think about your wildest dream. What is it you want out of life? Now pray that big bold prayer, and let God know what dream is buried deep in your heart.

The biggest key ingredient is to “believe.” You gave your prayer to God, and only He can do the impossible. Now it’s up to you to believe that what you ask for is on its way. This is the hardest thing of all to do, because how can we believe in something we cannot see or control? This is where your belief in God comes in. You either believe, or you don’t. When you believe, it’s something you just know. It’s something you feel inside. It’s peace, it’s love, it’s everything. Believe with all that you are, and don’t give up on that dream.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” ~ Proverbs 3:5-6

Just as it is written in The Bible, we have to lean not on our understanding; we have no choice but to trust in the Lord. Part of trusting is to believe. Our understanding is not the same as God’s all-knowing sovereignty. He knew everything we were going to face in this life before we were even conceived. He knew every wrong road we were going to take before we took it. He knows the plan He has for us, and it will not happen until He feels the time is right. Therefore, we have to have faith, and believe that even during the storms life throws our way, we will get through, and in the end we will be stronger for it. Even when we take the wrong turn, God is there to lead us down the right path again. It may be a detour, but eventually we will get there, and we will have endured what we thought we couldn’t.

God wants the best for all of us. God doesn’t want the best just for you, He wants the best for everyone. That’s why it is important for us to understand that what we may be asking for might not come in our timing, or in the manner in which we expected. This is when our belief is tested and we must hold onto that belief and trust in Him. Even though it did not happen when we thought it would, we still have to believe that it will happen. Then, just maybe, it will be better than we ever expected, and that may be why it took longer. Then again, maybe it wasn’t in our best interest, and God knew, because He is the all-knowing. He knows the long-term results, He knows the implications, He knows those that will be hurt as a result, and again, He wants the best for everyone.

Think of it this way: Your child wants to eat all his or her Halloween candy in one sitting. We want our children to be happy, but are we going to let them eat all of that candy, knowing they will get sick? Of course not. The same concept applies for God. We have to trust that He has our best interests at heart, and if we’re meant to have what we’re asking for, we will receive. If it isn’t meant to be, then He has a pretty good reason for it. Do you remember when you were young, and your parents said, “Because I said so!”? Do you remember how frustrated that you made you feel? Maybe it even made you angry, and you stomped off to your room, hating them at the time. Well, God understands that, too. When we are faced with trials and tribulations, and feel like He is not answering our prayers, it’s our natural reaction to feel rejected, and even unloved by God, because He didn’t do what we wanted Him to do. He knows how you feel, but that’s when He is testing your faith. He is making you stronger. He is teaching you endurance. He can’t fix everything, because it is not for the good of everyone. Will He stop loving us because we are mad at Him? Of course not! Did you stop loving your children because they stomped off to their bedroom? Of course not! Eventually, your children will get over it, and someday realize that you said no for their own good. And one day, they will overindulge in something and realize, oh, yeah, that’s why I couldn’t eat all that candy at once. You, too, will come to realize, after you’ve had time to think, do some self-reflection, and re-evaluation, why God didn’t answer your prayer. And, when you do, God will be right there waiting for you. He never went anywhere; He was just waiting for you to grab His hand.

Not long ago, my husband and I were looking for some property, and daydreaming with some friends about buying land next to each other for retirement, and investment. I’d sent a pretty bold prayer request to God. I’ve heard you should ask for what you really want, and that only God can move mountains to bring your dream to a reality, and that he wants us to prosper. So, I thought, why not? It was a pipe dream, but, hey, God is God, right? I went on with my weekend, investigating our pipe dream.

When we came home, I ran across this verse in Deuteronomy 8:18, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth . . .” I was speechless. Such timing. He always seems to be talking to me, and the messages are so clear. Well, our pipe dream will have to wait awhile, because God brought us to the conclusion that it was not a wise decision based on the financial hardship it would put us in. Instead, God led us down the path of refinancing our home at a better interest rate for a shorter term. He also led us to investigating ways to practically become debt free in a much shorter timeframe than we had imagined, which will allow us the ability to afford our dream retirement home when the right time does come. In God’s time, not ours.

Keep that in mind the next time you don’t get what you want. Keep the faith, and be grateful for what you do have. Most of all; be thankful for the opportunities to grow that God gives you, so that you can become stronger and endure life’s challenges a little easier. Once you master the art of believing, then, and only then, will you have peace in your heart, knowing that God’s will is the best for everyone. That is enough for me, because believing is what will give us never-ending life, and for me, that is the ultimate gift. Until you can come to terms with remaining in faith, and believe in His will, try to remain positive, seek the word of God, and pray even when you have doubt. One day we will all understand His reasoning, and until then, all we can do is believe.

God wants us all to prosper and have an abundant life. He has plans for us all. In The Bible, wealth means having abundance, and as the scripture says, “He gives us the power to get wealth.” Through Him, we are given creative ideas, and sent down a path toward our dream, but we have to do our part as well and take the steps toward that dream. We can’t sit back and wait for God to knock on our door; we have to walk forward, even when the road is foggy. With God by our side and faith in our hearts, we will walk into the sunshine every day.  The road map is yours. Enjoy your journey.

What Are You Thinking About?

Have you ever been asked that question, and wonder to yourself, ‘I really don’t know.’?

I’ve been sitting here for two days staring at this page unsure of how to start and put into words what I want to say. I have alot to share as it’s been a while since I’ve blogged anything. The thing is, where do you start? 2020 was such an unusual year for all of us, and I know I’m not alone in saying that I hope 2021 is better. I must say though that up until a month ago, I had no real complaints. In fact, I felt like I’ve been living my best life ever!

When this pandemic started, my boyfriend and I decided I should come stay with him until everything was over – which we thought would be about two weeks! Well, we all know it’s only getting worse and not sure if there is any real end in sight. For Pat and I though, things have been great. This pandemic brought us closer together. In fact, we decided in June that I should just plan to move in permanently and that’s when I moved most of my things into storage as we began to look for a new home. The housing market was moving in our favor and we figured why not. The only issue was finding our dream house and being able to afford what we wanted. Retirement is our goal, and that led us to Georgia where the cost of living, especially the housing market, is so much more affordable and you get much more for your money. We looked at a dozen homes that were already built before we decided on building our own. We settled on a beautiful rancher in the same neighborhood as my mother. Right around the corner, so its very convenient!

I talked with my boss and was able to get approval so that I could work remote from Georgia. Then Pat started doing his job search and his company was able to do the same thing for him! God has been answering all of our prayers and making our dreams come true. We then contacted movers and started the planning phase. With a settlement date set for the end of 2020, we set our move date for January 15th!

Then came mid-November and my mother and step-father both came down with Covid. That sure was a worry as both are seniors and my mom has a compromised immune system already. It was scary and she found herself in the hospital hooked to an IV getting fluids to hydrate her again. So much was going through my mind and thought of losing her was devasting; especially right now when we have so much to look forward to. Granted it took a good month and it was a fight for them that luckily they both won! Again, God answered our prayers.

Then December 13th at 3:30am, I get a phone call that knocked the wind right out of me! Every parents nightmare!

“It’s about your son. We’re flying him to Shock Trauma and you need to start heading there now.”

I can’t even tell you what was going through my mind at that moment. It was a flood of emotions like I’ve never experienced before. So much uncertainty and disbelief. I didn’t know what to do first; who to call; should I scream or cry…. That’s when Pat grabbed me and started to pray before we did anything. All I knew at that time was that my son had been on a golf cart and fell off and hit the pavement hard. Blood was coming out his ear and he had been briefly unconcious and the EMTs were assessing the situation. No charges were being filed, but I needed to get to Shock Trauma.

“So this is how 2020 is going to end”, I thought. My world was coming to a screeching hault in a matter of seconds. Before we ran out the door, I grabbed my Bible and my latest book, “Break Down Your Walls: Be the Person God Created You to Be….Be a Better YOU!” I knew I needed to read my own words for inspiration. I preach all the time to be positive, don’t dwell on the negative or things you can not control, etc. I also know it is so easy to say, but when you are living in those moments of fear and tests of faith, it’s not always easy to practice what you preach and I was going to need all of the encouragement I could get.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to see him once I got to the hospital or not. Luckily, they said because he was critical one person would be allowed back and that person could not leave. Once they left, they could not return. This was all too much to take in, but I wasn’t leaving. I just wasn’t prepared for what I was about to see or what these next few days would be like. It was like driving in a dense fog and struggling to see the tail lights of the car in front of you so you could just blindly follow trusting the fog would clear.

This is a story I want to share with everyone. It’s a story of hope, faith, love, and the miracle of God. It’s about expecting the worst, praying for the best, and receiving God’s Miracle!

When Will We Learn?

5a0f5dd4579799680f4ce53b42ae6140 I can’t tell you how many times I have strayed away from my dedicated time with God because of my own desire to spend my time more productively doing the things I feel I must do.  Yet, every time I come back to that quiet place talking with God and being present with Him, I am always amazed.  It’s as if He knows, and He does, exactly where I leave off and when I will pick back up again!

This morning was one of those days.  It is my desire to start my day with God because I know that is the best way to stay intuned with Him, His desires, and His Will for my life. Then, it is the evil one who tempts me into wondering what’s happening on Facebook or who responded to my messages, etc. Once I give in to the distraction, it just spirals into my day and God is left waiting for me to return.  I always return in the evening in prayer, but had I started my day with Him instead, the result would have been so much greater!

You see, as we grow in our desire to please Him above all else, we gain strength to resist these distractions.  It is a daily battle, but if we stick with God, we can’t go wrong – for God is the way!  For me, it’s as if He answers my prayers almost immediately at times.  I always give Him the praise and express my gratitude towards Him because without Him it would not be possible!  I give Him thanks first, and then I let Him know what it is I need. I always ask Him to bring the right people into my life to help me do His Will!

If you are lucky enough to know in your heart what His Will is for you, then you are truly blessed.  He has a plan for all of us and He gave each of us a Gift that we are capable of blessing so many with.  For me, every since I was a young child, He placed a dream in my heart to be an Author.  I never thought that would happen in a million years, but He had a plan.  You’ve heard though that it will happen in His Timing, that is so true.  I had tried earlier to attempt writing a book, but nothing ever happened.  His plan for me was to write spiritual inspirational stories and that plan took time.  It took Him putting me into situations where I could learn what I needed to learn before I was actually ready.  He placed certain people in my path that would help me. He led me in the right direction and reguided my steps when I took the wrong path.  Nothing will stop His Plan, though it may take you much longer to get there when you are not listening and following His lead.

Now that I know this, when I pray, He answers me.  I, though, have to be open and patient to recognizing His words, His plan, and His timing. I do this in knowing and believing in Him and Him alone!  For His Spirit is always with me, and He can do amazing things!  He has blessed me in so many ways and I know that the best is yet to come!  He gave me a second chance at life. He allowed me to heal inside and out after a heart attack last year.  He has blessed me with my second book, “Break Down Your Walls: Be the Person God Created…Be a Better YOU!” available now on Amazon.  Where I share with you everything I learned and wish I had known before my heart attack.  I learned how to deal with my stress, which is what caused my heart attack. Now, through my writing, I am able to help so many others who are struggling as well.

Now, He is working for me to put me in a situation where I can begin to grow my following in a manner that will allow me to dedicate more and more of my time on His Will.  I have found that His Will for me is inspiring others to become a better person, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.  The current path He is leading me on is the natural path of wellness in living an abundant life of overall wellness by spreading the love of essential oils.  Essential Oils was God’s Gift to us from day one!  They date back to before Genesis in the Bible and are mentioned throughout the Bible as being the cure to many ailments.  I have found that Young Living Essential Oils is the only company that I would trust when it comes to 100% Thereapeutic Grade Oils because they are the only company with the Seed-to-Seal promise guaranteeing their authenticity through rigorous testing methods and processes to ensure nothing but the absolute best quality.  The oils and products that Young Living offers support every system in our body and aid in supporting our overall wellness, emotions, balancing our spiritually through meditation and aromatherapy.  There are three ways you can use the essential oils: topically, aromatically, and ingesting by using the vitality oils that you can put in your water, use in cooking, or take internally with a vegetable capsule as a dietary supplement.

God is Directing My Path

god is fightingLast year after my heart attack, which was all due to stress, I had even more stress and anxiety as a result of almost losing my life.  I remember screaming in my head, “God I am not ready to Die!” He gave me that second chance and I thank Him every day for that!  Since then, I have prayed for Him to give me a way to help to supplement our health and our income so eventually we could relieve some of our stress.

If you’ve been following me, you know Mom and I have been writing for years and that has been our ultimate dream and goal in life.  During my recovery period after that heart-attack is when I was writing my second book, “Break Down Your Walls: Be the Person God Created … Be a Better You!”  While I was writing that book, is when I was praying and it felt like I was praying the entire time I was writing.  It also seemed that He was giving me the words to write, as He usually does.  It was two weeks later when Young Living came into my life. At first, I had no intention of selling Young Living.  After all, I just had a heart attack, was preparing to go back to the same stressful job, and certainly couldn’t take on another project at that time.  However, as soon as it dawned on me that Young Living could be the answer to my prayers, my thought process immediately changed, as did my life!  I knew without a doubt that this was God’s answer for me I have given it my all ever since.  Young Living has changed me and my ways in so many different aspects.  I couldn’t be happier.  I thoroughly enjoy sharing and helping other people realize the benefits of essential oils and how they too can change their lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually!  I do this through my inspirational writing as I have been doing for years, and now I also am able to share the love of oils and how they can help support our emotions, stress levels, health, and overall wellness!

If you would like to learn  more about Young Living and how you too could find an affordable way to ditch the chemicals in your life and switch to a more natural way of living through plant-based products, I would love for you to join me Thursday, August 10th at 8pm EST LIVE on Facebook.  Please connect with me through Facebook https://www.facebook.com/sharon.daileyshabinaw and let me know if you’re interested and I’ll be sure to add you to the invite! It can change your life as well!  You won’t be sorry!  After all, essential oils were God’s gift to us and date back to Genesis and mentioned in the Bible many, many times!

The More You Seek, The More You Find

See Gods Work in Everything

This is something I have learned over the years, and it truly does seem that the more you seek, the more you will find.  The more you reach out to God for support, the more support you will receive.  You see, all we have to do is turn to God, give Him our worries, our problems, our desires, and in return He blesses us beyond our wildest dreams.  The thing though is, that once we give it to God, we have to have faith that He Will will be done!  God has a plan and we cannot change that plan, even if it is not what we wanted. What we will find though, if we give it time, is that His plan is a better plan for all involved.  To take it a step further, we have to also realize that it is not always just about us and our desires, but the desires and the needs for everyone involved.

Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to us, but we have to trust that His way, is the best way! One day it will make sense, and until that day comes, leave it to God, put your trust in Him, and Faith in the unknown.  When we start recognizing God’s hand and show gratitude, the more we will recognize His Will in everything!

Gratitude Fills My Heart

I was wondering what I could blog about and it became so clear to me, because I have so much to be thankful for.  God gave me a second chance at life.  He took control of my life and forced me to take the time I needed to rest, to heal, to grow, and to become a better person…the person He created me to be!

As I sit here looking at this rock and the word Gratitude, it means so much because I am grateful for so much in my life right now.  I truly feel as if I am in the middle of such a pivotal point in my life.  I’m 54 years young, happily married, and have a wonderful family. I have my health back, and I am conquering stress. While it will always be a challenge, I feel like I finally have it all figured out.  Sometimes, I have to remind myself to give it to God and listen to my own words and remember that we can only change our reactions. We can’t change people or situations, and worrying about it, isn’t going to change anything! You see, after my heart attack last year and all the soul searching and self-development I went through, I now feel like I have a secret and I want to share it with the world.

My second book, Break Down Your Walls: Be the Person God Created You to Be … Be a Better You!, is allowing me to share that secret and I couldn’t be happier.  It’s only be out for a couple of weeks and I have already received messages from people saying how much they’ve enjoyed it and they are now buying more for their friends and family!  I have received so many good blessings and I know that this is just going to continue more and more as I continue to plant seeds of healing greatness.

Many of you may know that it’s always been my mission to inspire other people to become a better version of themselves – emotionally, physically, and spiritually and I couldn’t be happier than to be blessed with this dream! God gave me this dream many, many, years ago and now I am living it out.  I know it is only going to get better, and I couldn’t be happier!  I’ve been saying for a while now, “the time is now”, and that is where this pivotal point comes in!  I truly believe I am in the midst of something so big it almost feels like a dream at times.  How can you love what you are doing so much that it is all you want to do?  That’s how I feel right now!  I’ve always been a leader and not a follower, and now I am leading a group of other leaders on their own journey….this journey is what we call, the Young Living journey!

Offering Value

struggling duck babies

Everyone is struggling with something.  For some it might seem like an easy task, but to others it may be the one thing that stops them in their tracks.  We are all different, and we all have our breaking point.  You see God didn’t say life was going to be easy and that we wouldn’t face challenges.  It is those challenges though that make us stronger! Especially, when being strong is the only choice you have.

Look at the picture and just imagine….what if that next little duckling nudged the first duckling, wouldn’t it take some pressure off that first duckling?  Of course it would! Now, look back at what you’ve been struggling with.  Try to imagine if someone had shared their story with you about how they overcame that same struggle, wouldn’t their trymph have helped you in taking your next step?  Sometimes, the struggle is real and we don’t want other people to know we are struggling, right?  We think we are invisible. We think we can do anything, but what we are doing wrong is trying to do it ourselves!

When I started sharing my story and my mom’s story, it amazed me how many people were dealing with the same struggles or knew someone that was.  It can be such an invigorating moment when you learn to be vulnerable and that vulnerability was the source of breaking that affliction for someone else.  Someone you just met, and it was your vulnerability that allowed them to be vulnerable as well. When that happens, it feels like you could talk for hours with that person and when you leave it is as though you’ve known them all your life! The impact you left on that person can last a lifetime, even though you may never speak to that person again, and that is an amazing feeling!

By sharing our stories, someone out there will know they are not alone in their struggles. They are not weak. There is nothing wrong with them. They are just in the midst of an opportunity to become stronger. To become a better person. To become the person God made them to be.  So the next time you are faced with a challenge, look at that challenge as a chance to improve, a chance to learn something new, a chance to advance to the next level!  You see God has a plan for all of us, and until we meet our destiny, we need to rely on Him. He puts people in our path for a reason.  That reason might be for them to help us, or us to help them.  It works both ways – just know, it’s all for a reason!  And if we stray the wrong way, God will point us yet again in the right direction because ultimately, He wants the best for us and only the best!

Talking to God and thanking him for everything every single day is what gets me through those challenges and obstables and I am so grateful for the learning season.  That’s all it is, is a season.  There is a reason and a season for everything. Some of us will pass the test and some will take longer.  It’s up to us, our attitude, our ability to step out of comfort zone and be vulnerable, our willingness to offer value to a stranger, and our ability to trust in God!

What’s your story?  What’s your struggle?  Whatever it is – you are not alone!  God is always with you. He is that voice in your head you hear whispering for you to do something – all you need to do is listen and follow his lead!

I will be sharing my story this week and I would like to invite you as I step out of my comfort zone!  Have you ever wondered or tried to imagine what someone’s story is? Some people have their story so well buried that you would never be able to guess!

Thanks for listening.  I’d love to hear your story!  Feel free to connect with me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sharon.daileyshabinaw
